The term “Cyclovia” may be new to your vocabulary, but you’ve ever dreamed of biking, running, or strolling through the streets as your own pedestrian thoroughfare, you are already familiar with the concept. Cyclovia Nogales, Nogales first Cyclovia, will transform Morley Avenue in front of Karam Park into a car-free parkway for everyone to enjoy.
Hosted by 0S3 Movement, City of Nogales and collaborators, the event takes place every first Sunday of the month, from 7am to 2pm Our intentions are not only to help people be active in the streets but also to give them a different perspective of our streets as part of a healthy city. Cyclovia is a Spanish term meaning “bike parkway.”
The term recently has been adopted by cities across the world to describe one-day street closure events that foster physical activity and civic pride. The original Cyclovia was conceived in Bogota, Colombia, in the 1980s as a response to traffic congestion, and the city still holds a 70-mile Cyclovia every Sunday.
Each summer, cities such as Tucson, San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Madison, Wis., Portland, Ore., and others across the world hold several Cyclovias, attracting hundreds and thousands of people to each event.
Cyclovia Nogales participants can enjoy a variety of fun, healthy activities along the street closure route, including yoga and zumba demonstrations, face painting and jump-rope demonstrations, healthy food trucks and cooking demonstrations, a kids bike skills rodeo, a classic bicycle display and bicycle repair, health screenings and much more.
If you have ever blocked off a cul-de-sac for a street soccer match, taken your kids for a bike ride around the block or simply wished for a car-free zone in which you can be active, I hope you will join us.
